A study funded
by the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association, Awnings in
Residential Buildings The Impact on Energy Use and Peak Demand,
and conducted by the Center for Sustainable Building Research at University
of Minnesota shows the impact that awnings over windows have on energy
costs throughout the year depending on climate and orientation. The
study investigated the impacts for single family homes in terms of heat
gain, energy costs in heating and cooling, and the energy use during
peak periods. The study indicates that the impact of energy use and
peak demand varies widely depending on the climate, number of windows,
type of glass in the windows, window orientation.
Researchers used
a special computer program to investigate variables used with a standard
awning with sides. The variables included geographic location, window
orientation and exposure, winter and summer usage, and three types of
windows. This study is covers twelve cities that exemplify a wide range
of temperature variations and sun angles found across the U.S.
